If you’re lucky enough to have a pool in your backyard, you will also know that regular maintenance is required to keep your pool looking it’s best. Rather than hiring a professional to do it for you, save some money in the process and do it yourself.
In this article, we’ve come up with a few handy tips to ensure your pool is well maintained all year round.
1. Keep Your Filter Clean
It can be easy to forget to clean your filter when everything seems fine on the surface. If you’re using the pool regularly, millions of dirt particles can accumulate and clog up your filter – resulting in a murky and cloudy coloured pool. In the long run, this may cause issues with your pump, diminishing its ability to work at its full capacity.
Filter cleaning should be done at least once weekly as adequate maintenance. With many different kinds of filters on the market, it’s advisable to speak to a pool professional to ensure you get the best filter specific to your pool to allow for optimum cleaning results.
2. Monitor PH Levels
Testing your pH level is a way of determining the amount of acidity in the water and is often measured from a baseline of 0-14. Neutral pH is usually half way at 7. Anything above 7 is considered more alkaline, if below 7, the water is considered more acidic.
The aim is to get it to sit between a pH level of 7.2-7.6. To ensure your water remains stable and in good swimming condition, it’s a good idea to check this as often as possible throughout the year.
Check Water Levels
During the warmer months, pools can lose water through heat evaporation, splashing and daily use. If you notice the water is below the recommended level (this is when it falls under the skimmer intake tubes) you are at risk of damaging the pump. A simple and easy way to remedy the situation is to refill the swimming pool with a garden hose and let it run until it’s sufficiently full. Make sure to check water levels regularly.
4.
Net & Vacuum
A quick and easy way to keep your pool clean is with a net, rake or vacuum. A larger net is great at lifting debris such as twigs, branches, leaves and other rubbish that may have landed in the pool. If you have dirt and debris sitting on the bottom of your pool, investing in a pool vacuum will work wonders at removing excess leaves that may be difficult to remove with a rake or net.
Although it’s harder to do during the cooler months, you don’t want to let the dirt accumulate to the point where it makes your job extra harder. Keep up with regular cleaning, even if it’s on a fortnightly or monthly basis.
